Solar panel removal and reinstall for a roof replacement
Roofers will not work around an array, and they should not. Replacing a roof under solar means a separate detach and reset by a solar crew, scheduled around the roofing job. Here is how to sequence it without paying twice.
Why the roofer will not do it
Removing an array means disconnecting live DC circuits, handling equipment worth tens of thousands of dollars, and re-flashing every roof penetration on reinstall. It requires an electrical license and solar-specific experience. A roofing crew that offers to "just take the panels off" is either subcontracting it — fine, ask who — or working outside its competence, which is how arrays get damaged and warranties get voided.
The sequence
Two solar visits bracketing one roofing job. Stage two is also the cheapest moment in your system's life to replace a failing inverter or upgrade racking — the array is already down and the crew is already there.
- Assess before anything is scheduled
A solar contractor confirms array size, mounting system, and roof condition, and flags equipment too old or damaged to be worth reinstalling. Better to know now than with the panels stacked in your driveway.
- Detach
System shut down and locked out, panels removed and stored on site or transported, racking and mounts unbolted, penetrations temporarily sealed. Typically one day for a residential array.
- Roof replacement
The roofing crew works on a clear deck. This is also the moment to have them install the new flashing points if your solar contractor has specified locations.
- Reinstall and re-commission
New mounts and flashing, racking rebuilt, panels remounted, wiring reconnected, system restarted and production verified. Usually one to two days.
What it costs
Roughly $2,000 to $6,000 in California for a typical residential array, covering both visits. The drivers are panel count, roof pitch and material, single or two story, and how many penetrations need re-flashing. Storage may be a separate line if the roofing job runs long.
Get the detach and reset quoted before you commit to the roofing job, not after. It is a real part of the project budget and homeowners are routinely surprised by it.
The one piece of leverage you have. The array is already off the roof and the crew is already on site. That is the cheapest moment in the system's entire life to replace a failing inverter, swap damaged panels, upgrade the racking, or add conduit for a future battery. Ask what else is worth doing while everything is open. Doing it later means paying for the access twice.
If your installer is gone, get this in writing
Reinstalling an array creates new roof penetrations, and whoever makes them should warrant them. With the original installer out of business, nobody currently carries workmanship coverage on your roof. Ask the contractor doing the reset what their own workmanship warranty covers on the penetrations they create, and get the term in writing. It is one of the few chances you get to put that protection back.
Also worth confirming: who is liable if a panel is damaged during removal or storage, and whether the reinstall is permitted and inspected. In most California jurisdictions a detach and reset requires a permit.
When reinstalling is the wrong call
Occasionally it is not worth it. If the array is old, small by current standards, or uses equipment whose manufacturer has also exited the market, the labor of reinstalling it may approach the value of what you are putting back. A candid contractor will tell you that. If you are weighing reinstall against a new system, get both quoted and compare the cost per watt rather than the headline number.
